In this episode, I am talking about AD&D spell Stone to Flesh spell, exploring its mechanics, its potential uses in gameplay, and of course, the chaotic consequences of casting it recklessly. I share a wild tale from one of my campaigns, where a low-level magic-user decided to use a scroll of Stone to Flesh to resurrect a petrified warrior. Spoiler alert: it did NOT go as planned. What started as a heroic attempt to save a cursed half-orc turned into a nightmare of a pulsating meat swamp, an angry resurrected warrior named Grugnar, and the unexpected arrival of a horrifying meat golem.
It’s a hilarious, chaotic tale packed with lessons about spell mechanics, player creativity, and the unpredictable beauty of tabletop RPGs. Tune in for laughs, storytelling, and a reminder of just how wild these games can get!
The “Stone to Flesh” spell is a Level 6 Alteration magic that allows the caster to transform stone into flesh, effectively reviving formerly living beings that have been turned to stone. The spell has a casting time of six segments and a permanent duration, although the survival of the revived creature is subject to a system shock survival dice roll. In addition to reviving life, the spell can also convert ordinary stone into flesh, with a volumetric limit of nine cubic feet per level of the spellcaster. Conversely, the reverse spell turns flesh back into stone, along with any possessions the creature may have. This process requires a saving throw for the intended victim. The spell’s material components include a pinch of earth and a drop of blood, while the reverse requires lime, water, and earth.
