AD&D - Cleric Command Spell Thoughts..
A funny memory from a game inspired me to talk about this today.
Today’s podcast was inspired by a funny (childish) memory I had of this spell, and how I had to handle it. Listen in as I go over the spell, give my thoughts and explain the funny memory.
The “Command” spell allows a cleric to issue a single, clear command to a creature that understands the language. The target must obey the command for one round, provided it’s unambiguous. Common commands include “halt” or “flee.” Undead and some intelligent creatures may resist the spell with a saving throw, ensuring it’s not foolproof.
Highlights
🗣️ Single Command: The spell issues one clear command.
👥 Language Dependent: The recipient must understand the command’s language.
⏳ Duration: Lasts for 1 round only.
🧠 Intelligence Check: Creatures with high intelligence can resist.
⚔️ Undead Immunity: Undead creatures are unaffected.
🚫 Ambiguity Matters: Commands must be unequivocal to be obeyed.
🎭 Common Commands: Examples include “stop,” “flee,” and “sleep.”
Key Insights
📜 Clarity is Crucial: The effectiveness of the spell hinges on the clarity of the command; ambiguous terms can render it useless—showing the importance of precise communication in spells.
🧠 Strategic Use: High-intelligence creatures can resist commands, encouraging clerics to target less intelligent foes for maximum effectiveness. This adds a layer of strategy in spellcasting.
⚖️ Moral Implications: Commands like “die” provoke ethical considerations, as they can incapacitate without causing actual harm, leading to moral dilemmas in gameplay.
🧟 Undead Dynamics: The immunity of undead to this spell highlights the cleric’s limitations and reinforces their role as protectors against dark forces.
🔄 One-Time Effect: The spell’s short duration (1 round) means clerics must act quickly, emphasizing the need for strategic planning in combat situations.
🔍 Language as a Tool: The requirement for the recipient to understand the command opens discussions about languages and communication within the game world, enhancing role-playing opportunities.
🎯 Targeting Strategy: Knowing the characteristics of potential targets (intelligence & level) can help clerics choose when and how to use the spell effectively, emphasizing tactical awareness in encounters.
